My motto sums it up a little more: Teach, Entertain and Motivate, all at the same time. The bottom line is that if you’re not aware of these techniques—or if you’re not using them effectively—you’re missing out on a huge part of your potential.

And your line of work doesn’t matter: The ability to deliver your message effectively will serve you well whether you’re in sales, management, training—even if you already are a speaker (or have always wanted to be one).

I’m thinking back to a conversation I had once with Les Brown, one of the greatest motivation speakers on the circuit today. When he first started out, he took a bus from Detroit, Michigan to a seminar I was teaching in Florida. He told me later that he didn’t have to ever again take a course on professional speaking because he learned everything he needed to know from me. Now, I don’t know if that’s true but it sure made me feel good.
