The Power Of Attention
Oct 10, 2016A Floyd Wickman Blog by Mike Pallin The first time I heard Floyd say, “You don’t have to be organized to get the job done,” I thought, Whew, that’s a relief. And then I learned that it's true you don’t have to be organized, but sometimes it helps.
Of all the things to pay attention to, whether or not your workspace smells like “Lemon Fresh Pledge,” doesn’t make that big a difference. Look at this picture of Albert Einstein at his desk.
Some of the most productive people in the world are disorganized, or even unorganized.
It is almost a cliché to see the absent-minded professor, the brilliant thinker coming up with brilliance in the midst of clutter and chaos. Clutter and disorganization doesn’t seem to bother some people.
On the other hand, a good cleaning and reorganization of your workspace can help give you that clean slate, fresh start perspective when you feel off track, out of sorts, unmotivated and indifferent. (See The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up by Marie Kondo)
What all consistently productive people have in common is the ability to pay attention to the task at hand. In other words, focus. That’s one of the reasons so many people credit Floyd’s productivity tool called The Focus Organizer (see the attachment at the end of this blog) with making a major difference in their business and life.
As you walk through The Focus Organizer, you can see why it crystallizes your thinking, galvanizes your motivation, and directs your activity while maintaining balance in your life. All the ingredients you need for a portable business plan are right there at your fingertips.
The major benefit of The Focus Organizer though is its ability to create attention. Attention to what’s important. Attention to what serves your Life Purpose. Attention to progress. Attention to working high priority activities. And attention to the big picture.
The “Hawthorne Effect” is well-documented, and evidence that paying attention is where the real magic of productivity happens. Earl Nightingale may as well have said, “We become what we pay attention to.” Most good producers can be made a little better simply by management paying attention to them.
Think of The Focus Organizer like a magnifying glass. It brings details into sharper and closer focus. And when used properly, it can concentrate the attention, like a magnifying glass can concentrate sunlight into a laser beam.
The only caveat is that like all tools, The Focus Organizer only works if you work it. But once you do work it consistently, you find all kinds of uses for it.
Come join us at The Business Breakthrough in December, where you will learn how to use 7 of Floyd’s business building tools, including The Focus Organizer.
