The Best Coach I Ever Had
Dec 19, 2024The best coach I ever had was Jack Fisher, my High School swim team coach. His teams were undefeated in divisional dual meets for ten years in a row.
I never once heard him raise his voice or criticize a performance.
Coach prepared us to perform at our best with regular mandatory practices that included fun challenges and variety that kept it interesting.
He provided instant feedback on each performance, not just with our times, but more importantly with advice on technique. He was a student of technique and exposed us to the latest developments.
He took us outside our division area to compete against higher-level teams.
We were encouraged to strive for better times by tracking and measuring our progress toward specific goals.
And Coach was there, in season and out, whenever any of us on the team had a concern or question, or just needed reassurance or a boost.
With his every word and action, Coach showed us he believed in us.
That’s coaching.
Direction, guidance, feedback on performance, course correction, improving technique, measuring progress, and setting goals.
And belief.
