What's the Point?
Mar 31, 2022“What's the point of it all?” I have been hearing this a lot lately. Existential moments in the middle of the night, that leads to questioning what value this life and career has brought to the world.
“I have devoted five years, ten years, twenty years, thirty years to real estate, and what do I have to show for it? I haven't built a hospital or a school or a road or even a house. If I disappeared tomorrow, who would know? Worse yet, who would even care? Have I made a difference?”
Does this sound familiar? Have you felt this way before or had these thoughts?
I have a few answers for you if thoughts like these ever plague you.
If you have been working in real estate, you have been working. Contributing to the economy, not feeding off it. That's a good start.
You have been making a living, feeding a family, putting kids through school, funding a retirement, building a life, and paying your bills. That's something.
Now think about all the people you have helped with their housing needs; helping them make one of the biggest and most complicated financial decisions of their life. Decisions that if left up to them they wouldn't ordinarily be able to make on their own. But you were there for them; handholding, reassuring, advising, leading, and caring for them.
That's more than a little something. Food, clothing, and shelter - are basic human needs, and you have fulfilled those for your clients.
You provided shelter from the storm. You made their lives better. You helped them build wealth. You gave them pride in ownership. You built community. You helped them build families.
Think about all those people you served, and their friends and families. They are the point.
