Advice
Jul 04, 2018“THE BEST WAY TO MAKE SURE YOUR CHILDREN DON’T TAKE YOUR ADVICE IS TO OFFER IT BEFORE THEY ASK FOR IT.” -FLOYD
Floyd has given us many great principles and systems, but none more valuable than the Ask The Experts method of problem solving and goal achieving. We use it at every meeting and on every coaching call. It’s about how to ask for advice.
Get permission to ask.
State your goal and why you are asking.
Describe the obstacle, problem or challenge preventing you from achieving that goal.
Ask for one best piece of advice.
Write down what they say, no matter what, without comment.
Clarify if you have to. It’s okay to ask questions if you are unclear about the advice you are receiving.
Don’t say, “I already tried that and it didn’t work.”
Don’t say, “Yeah, but . . . “ anything.
And whatever you do, don’t argue with the people giving you the advice or they will stop giving you advice.
Let them know you appreciate the advice.
Thank them immediately.
Thank them again after using the advice. People like to hear what happened as a result of the advice they gave you.
Finally, remember the Master Mind principle. Whenever two minds come together in a spirit of harmony they create a third mind. Sometimes it’s not the specific advice you receive that helps you the most. It is the thoughts you have in your mind that come from hearing the advice.
Which also means that when you are being asked for advice, try not to censor yourself or discount the value of your advice because of a lack of experience.
One of the most profound truths we have discovered about group interaction is that when you are willing to give whatever you have, you will always get back what you need.
If you can find a group of people who are willing to give each other objective, honest and confidential advice - a group where you get solutions to your problems, and you get to help the other people find solutions to their problems – then you have found a gold mine.
